Today’s post consists of a set of language exercises focusing on vocabulary commonly used in conversations and discussions about artificial intelligence. A complete set of exercises can be downloaded at the end of the post. This post also includes a downloadable collection of around 20 role play exercises with audio and some videos including topics such as: complaints, phrasal verbs and requests, ordering in a restaurant, checking in to a hotel, past simple tense, countable/uncountable and more.
1. Visual vocabulary
One problem with using pictures is that sometimes students interpret pictures in different ways. It sometimes takes a bit of work to make each picture a unique match for a word. I often give these exercises to the different AI apps to see if they have the same answers as I do. It’s a good way to to iron out potential confusion. It’s also a good way to test the intelligence of Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini. It’s very useful. But, they are often not that smart!
I added a parts of speech exercise to go a bit deeper into the vocabulary.
2. Brainstorming positives and negatives
Brainstorming positives and negatives about everyday uses or potential uses is a nice starting point for discussions about AI, robotics, and automation. Teachers can use these topics to engage students in critical thinking about the impacts of AI on their lives and on society.
3. Artificial intelligence dialogue
This is a listening exercise to help students get used to vocabulary from Exercise 1.
4. Pronunciation
This includes “Circle the Word” and “Syllable Stress”. Totally fun!
5. Personalized Q and A
This is a set a of relatable questions using the vocabulary from Exercise 1.
6. Expressing opinions
This is also relatable and usually quite engaging.
7. Interview with an AI company CEO role play
This is a fairly easy listening/grammar exercise focusing on verbs.
8. Critical thinking
A combination of critical thinking activities: checklist, ranking sorting.
