Note: paid subscribers can now find links to customized GPTs used to create the exercises (you need to be a subscriber to GPT 4). Some exercises are included with the free section of the post. Paid subscribers can download the complete lessons with answers to all exercises and all the materials (audio and video) at the end of the post.

Steps in designing a pronunciation GPT

I’ve been trying to design a pronunciation GPT that will create pronunciation exercises for every class I teach.

The 2 exercises included are:

  1. Circle the word

  2. Syllable stress

These exercises can be used for every topic and and add a bit of variety and an extra dimension to every lesson. They are fun!

It is important to note that pronunciation is a bit challenging for AI in terms of word choice, formatting, and correct syllable stress.

Some things I’ve learnt are:

1. Have a list of words ready

  1. It’s a good idea to research the kinds of vocabulary you want to teach or have a list of words related to the topic ready. See below:

2. Formatting is challenging

The neatest way to present these exercises is in table or chart format. I’ve trained my GPT to create a table format. It’s easy to copy/ paste into Microsoft Word. See below.

3. Syllable stress needs checking

AI does a good job with syllable stress. It does an excellent job with syllable separation, but it definitely makes mistakes and you need to review the output. It’s also quite interesting in the different ways it presents the exercises and the answers. See the two examples of answers below.

Example 1:

Or

Example 2:

It is interesting that Example 1 is correct while Example 2 has mistakes. I think I will train the pronunciation GPT to provide answers in the first format. It seems more more organized and thoughtful! Example 2 seems a bit careless!
