A new GPT and prompt that creates a totally new style of personalized/customized exercise for almost any language teaching topic
Eslflow’s Personalized MC Opinions Creator (GPT)
Sorry, the name of this exercise is ridiculous at the moment. MC stands for multiple choice. Anyway, this GPT and prompt (the full prompt and information about the GPT is at the end of the post for paid subscribers) was in response to a common problem. Sometimes you realize the vocabulary and everything you are doing is too difficult for the students. The class is a total failure.
In response, this GPT emerged (in the middle of the night!). It gives students guidance and a helping hand by providing sentence starters with choices for sentence/opinion completion. I think this style of exercise is pretty useful for any class. It is adaptable, flexible and engaging. It can be used to introduce, practice or review specific topics, vocabulary or language functions. It gives examples (examples of collocations are particularly good). It also encourages some minimal critical thinking by giving them the option of adding their own “D” option. Then it asks them to do a little more critical thinking by providing an example/reason to support their choice. However, it’s not only for difficult vocabulary. It actually makes teaching vocabulary, grammar functions, general topics etc. smoother. It’s an interesting critical thinking exercise. And of course, it also is another new exercise and adds variety to a lesson. I’m going to be using it with all my classes for a few weeks.
The GPT already includes all the instructions for creating the exercise. Below are 6 examples of the types of exercise that can be created. And I have barely scratched the surface.
Example 1 Elementary
“Create an elementary everyday numbers and statistics exercise:”
The output is below.
The PDF has the full exercise.
Example 2 Grammar: countable/uncountable
“Create an elementary countable and uncountable exercise for daily life:”
Example 3a Grammar: present perfect (life)
“Create an elementary present perfect exercise for talking about your life:”
Example 3b Grammar: present perfect (recent)
“Please create an elementary present perfect exercise for talking about common activities this week/ this month/ this year. Use both affirmative and negative and also “already"/"yet"/not yet".”
Example 4a Topic: starting a business
“Create sentence starters for students thinking about starting a business using the following items: 1. location 2. products 3. marketing 4. services 5. customer service 6. prices 7. style of business 8. staff 9. shop design”
Example 4b Customized topic: starting a pharmacy business
I teach Thai pharmacy students who are studying English as a second language. And the topic is about starting a business. Below is the instruction I give the GPT. This exercise was so cool. It totally suited the class.
Example 5 Business English vocabulary
“Create sentences for Business English students using the following words: 1. approve 2. calculate 3. recruit 4. announce 5. reject 6. promote 7. confirm 8. reach 9. maintain 10. distribute”
Example 6 Academic vocabulary
It’s quite difficult teaching academic vocabulary to a class of varying abilities. But this exercise provides choices which are also examples. It helps the students get a better understanding of the vocabulary.
“Create easy sentences for these words: flammable unreliable inadvertent exploit obvious adhesive inconceivable vastly interact mandatory synthetic deprived biological reunion probability”
