This is another in a series of English as a second language lessons that focuses on contemporary topics. In my opinion, this is a good one, as just about everyone is affected and influenced by social media algorithms. There are so many ways to make an engaging lesson about this topic. The exercises below are designed to engage students. However, if you want a really deep dive into this topic, have a listen to the podcast, “How to save social media”.
1. Social media algorithms vocabulary
This vocabulary and listening exercise focuses on some essential vocabulary for understanding and talking about algorithms.
2. Introductory questions
This is a set of introductory multiple choice questions that eases students into the topic.
3. Social media algorithms dialogue
This is a dialogue and listening exercise to help students get used to the vocabulary.
4. Expressing opinions about algorithms
Below are 3 exercises that give students the opportunity to express their own opinions about social media algorithms. I have included the prompt and GPT link for the agree/disagree exercise in the paid subscriber section.
a. Agree/disagree
b. Multiple choice opinions (adaptable for weaker classes)
The multiple choice exercise is designed for weaker (not so much weaker as more flexible and adaptable for a wider range of abilities). I posted a similar exercise to this a few weeks ago. But, I think this new one is better.
c. Checklist, ranking and sorting critical thinking exercises
This is a new 3 exercise combination. I have again included the prompt and GPT link for paid subscribers at the end of the post.
Below is another newer kind of critical thinking exercise. I’ve been experimenting with using AI to create checklist, ranking and sorting exercises.
5. Pronunciation for social media algorithms vocabulary
This exercise is fun and focuses attention on pronunciation.
